Welcome & Why Me?
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve received while on my writing journey was to be ready to explain why you are the best person to write your book. So, in that spirit, here it goes.
My name is Sarah Guz, and I teach kids to use power tools. I also teach them to code, to make robots, and to integrate engineering concepts into everyday activities. I wrote Sea Monster S.O.S. to bring these concepts to life beyond my Northern California classroom.
Sea Monster S.O.S is a fun, middle-grade mystery filled with pirates, secret societies, ghosts, and sea monsters, but it’s much more than that. As a former journalist, I understand the vital role the news plays in our society. Sea Monster S.O.S. teaches kids what it means to consume the news responsibly, how to identify fake news, and what to do when they spot it. There’s also a STEM element to the story. When the characters inevitably find themselves in trouble, they use engineering concepts to escape (think: Middle Grade MacGyver).

Welcome to Monarch Bay, where monsters swim in the seas, and yetis pick berries for baking. Monarch Bay is where humans and mythical creatures have lived together peacefully—until now. When a sinister new secret society starts eliminating the sea monsters, only three unlikely heroes can stop them.
Luna Moon is a ghost hunter who has never caught a ghost. Cowgirl Susie Q is an animal whisperer who prefers ponies to people. Mateo Vargas is a middle-grade MacGyver with an answer for everything, even if it’s the wrong answer. Can these three unlikely friends work together to stop the secret society before the sea monsters disappear forever?
Sea Monster S.O.S. is Scooby Doo meets Bill Nye the Science Guy with a pinch of Yellowstone mixed in. Sea Monster S.O.S. is complete at approximately 60,000 words. The STEM element in Sea Monster S.O.S. naturally lends itself to platform building via social media. When Sea Monster S.O.S. is published, its audience will be waiting.
