ABOUT Sarah
journalist
Sarah Guz has written over 1,000 newspaper articles on time and on deadline. She became a role model for aspiring writers attending schools along the Northern California coast through her work as a Sports, Community, and Arts writer. Sarah Guz has been invited to speak to several elementary, middle school, and high school students about how she overcame poverty and discrimination to reach her goal of becoming a writer.
Software engineer
Before pursuing her dream of becoming a writer, Sarah spent 15 years in the Silicon Valley trenches writing code and later managing teams of computer programmers. She started as a member of the web team and later supported the sales and marketing teams as they crafted social media content for the company.
engineering & tech teacher
Most recently, Sarah has taught Makerspace, robotics, engineering, and coding at a Bay Area STEM School. In 2020, she was commissioned to build a makerspace out of an abandoned classroom. Sarah accepted the challenge and transformed the neglected space into a place where kids came to learn 3D printing, how to use power tools, and how to use engineering to solve problems.
Sarah created an engineering and technology curriculum for preschool through 8th grade aligned with Next Generation Science Standards.
She also coached basketball and volleyball, and served as the school athletic director.
Sarah’s classroom door was always open, and students would stop by during lunch and recess to tinker and chat. Sarah and her students often discussed books, and through these chats, she gained a clear picture of what the middle-grade reader is looking to read. She also discovered that the options are often limited when it comes to a great middle school read.
